PVV leader Geert Wilders has called for official protection for the party's candidates in next week's provincial elections.

He says candidates are being confronted by 'attacks and violence' and that it is 'disgusting' how the media and other politicians are silent on the issue, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

The statement came after a window was broken at the home of a 20-year-old student candidate for the party in Etten-Leur in Noord-Brabant province.
