Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson refused to comment on a statement made by his colleague, Sveinbjörg Birna Sveinbjörnsdóttir, first on the Progressive Party's list in Reykjavík for Saturday's municipal elections, that she is opposed to the proposed mosque in Reykjavík, at a meeting in North Iceland last night. Reykjavík City Council has already allocated a lot for the mosque and construction is set to begin this year.
According to a reporter from visir.is, the Prime Minister refused to speak about the issue and seemed unhappy about the question. He told the reporter that he would send a statement late last night but is yet to do so.
Sigmundur also said that he disagrees with Bjarni Benediktsson, minister of finance and chair of the Independence Party that it may be possible for the government to sell up to 20 percent of Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company of Iceland, to Icelandic pension funds.
