A motion on ensuring young girls in the district are safeguarded against female genital mutilation (FGM) was unanimously supported at a full Cherwell District council meeting on Monday.

Councillor Kieron Mallon, who submitted the motion, said: "A tougher response is needed from police and prosecutors; cultural hand wringing has to stop. Anyone who performs or condones such barbaric practices must be made to feel the full force of the law.

"All female babies born in the UK have the right to live a life free of the physical and psychological effects of FGM."
