The AFL has announced it will install prayer rooms at every football ground, thereby taking a secular pastime, and a place divorced from life's earnest disputations, and introducing into it a kernel of the world it was designed to escape.
It's a small sanctuary, this brief window of play, away from the prejudices, politics and religious divisions that routinely haunt us. And Andrew Demetriou, acting like a Trojan bouncer, has swung open the door and invited religion inside, paying no heed to the humourlessness and zealotry that routinely attend it.
The AFL says prayer rooms will be open for all forms of worship. That's a thing I'd like to see: the Jew in supplication alongside the Muslim alongside the Christian, et cetera, all happily entreating competing deities. No. You would need many rooms, Andrew, for the many faiths, if they all wanted to pray at the footy.
