Young West Australian girls and infants could be being subject to genital mutilation as part of long-held family traditions.

The case of the baby girl who was taken overseas by her parents to have her genitals mutilated which came to light last week may not be the only such case in Perth.

Curtin University researcher Dr Anne Aly said it was too hard to know the extent of female genital mutilation in the state.
