The French Alps might seem a strange place to find what Angela Merkel says threatens Europe. But standing on the mountain pass from where Hannibal may once have descended on Rome, I could see what was worrying the German chancellor.
Christelle Lechevalier, a French National Rally (formerly National Front) MEP, was making a YouTube video with members of Generation Identity, pan-European young activists committed to removing Islam and non-ethnic Europeans from the Continent. "If we don't do something about our borders, we will disappear," Lechevallier said to the camera.
Behind her, three African men trudged illegally out of Italy, over the open border, into France. The footage was perfect. The backdrop to it is the political crisis that almost broke Merkel last week and is not yet resolved.
