Some High-Profile Detentions of Foreigners in Iran [incl. Haleh Esfandiari]

Westerners detained as part of a crackdown after disputed elections in June:

_ Clotilde Reiss — French academic arrested on July 1. Convicted of provoking unrest and spying but returned to France Sunday after her 10-year jail term had been commuted to a $300,000 fine.

_ Iason Athanasiadis — British-Greek journalist released July 5 after about two weeks in detention.

_ Kian Tajbakhsh — American academic sentenced in October 2009 to 12 years in prison for conspiring against state security.

_ Maziar Bahari — Canadian-Iranian journalist with Newsweek, freed on $300,000 bail in October 2009 after nearly four months in detention.

Westerners detained before the election:

_ Roxana Saberi, American journalist, arrested in January 2009, convicted of spying and sentenced to eight years prison, overturned on appeal and freed May 2009

_ Haleh Esfandiari, American journalist, arrested in May 2007, accused of conspiring to overthrow the government, freed in August 2007.

_ 15 British sailors and marines were seized by Iran in March 2007 and held for nearly two weeks for allegedly crossing into Iran along its river border with Iraq. Some were paraded on television to deliver confessions for trespassing.
