The former principal of the city’s first Arabic language school says she will not sue the city for discrimination.
Debbie Almontaser now says a lengthy legal battle would not be worth it.
“Gratifying as this decision is, I have decided that it is time for me to move on,” said Almonster in a video statement posted online. “I am announcing today that I have instructed my lawyers to refrain from pursuing further litigation against the DOE because of the extraordinary emotional toll it has taken on my family and me.”
This comes two months after the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission ruled the Department of Education discriminated against Almontaser in 2007 when it forced her to resign from the Khalil Gibran International Academy in Brooklyn.
The DOE rejected the claim and said it will not reinstate her.
Almontaser founded the school, which she envisioned would provide knowledge and understanding of Arab language and culture.
