CSUN Student Jailed in Iran Released on Bail, Still Faces Serious Charges [on Esha Momeni]

Esha Momeni, the Cal State Northridge graduate student that was arrested in October in Iran still cannot leave the country, but she has been released on bail. Momeni’s father, Reza, put up the deed to his family’s apartment in order to raise the $200,000 needed for his daughter’s bail.

Momeni, who was visiting Iran in order to collect research for her master’s thesis which is based on a group fighting for improved women’s rights in the country, was arrested in the city of Tehran on October 15. Although her father reports that she has lost fifteen pounds while in jail, she appears to be in good health.

Momeni is expected to appear in an Iranian court Tuesday on charges she still must face of “acting against national security” and propagating against the system.” If convicted, Momeni could be back in an Iranian jail cell for an extended period of time as these charges could result in long prison terms.

Fellow CSUN students plan to hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Momeni at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday night at Cal State Northridge.
