The state commissioner of education today upheld a decision to fine an Inver Grove Heights charter school $139,802 for employing eight teachers who did not have valid teaching licenses or permits last year.
The Minnesota Department of Education initially found 14 teachers to be out of compliance at Tarek ibn Ziyad Academy, which also has a campus in Blaine. Commissioner of Education Alice Seagren reduced that number to eight.
The fine is based upon state statute, and will be withheld from the school's state funding starting Dec. 15.
TiZA school officials could not be reached immediately for comment.
