Nagwa Megahed is a Fulbright scholar who will be educating Southern Miss students about the Arabic language and Middle Eastern culture during her one year in Hattiesburg. Megahed teaches education and Middle Eastern studies at a University in Cairo, Egypt.
With the addition of Megahed, Southern Miss students can now minor in Arabic Studies. It's a program specific to Southern Miss because it's the only University in the state that offers it. Megahed and her family have lived in Hattiesburg for just ten days and she said the community has been very welcoming.
"It's a really nice, wonderful city. I'm from Cairo, which is totally different than Hattiesburg, but maybe this is why I love it because you experience different situations and I love the people. I love the city, I do really enjoy being here," said Megahed.
Arabic is a new field of study for Southern Miss and officials hope more students take advantage of Nagwa Megahed's knowledge and sign up for her classes.
