The State Department is sending Dennis Ross, its special envoy for the Persian Gulf, to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar today, to discuss international diplomatic efforts to persuade Iran to abandon its suspected quest for nuclear weapons. He will be accompanied by the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, Lt. Gen. John R. Allen, and National Security Council official Puneet Talwar. Ross's trip "is about reassuring allies that they are not going to make a grand deal with Iran at their expense," an administration source suggested to Laura Rozen at Foreign Policy.
Two interesting aspects here: (1) Ross is accompanied by a senior official of the Central Command, to discuss diplomatic outreach to Iran. (2) The focus is Sunni allies alarmed about Iran.
